Local boys Nicholas Payas and Julian De Las Heras from Special Olympics Gibraltar are training hard for this years World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi.
A statement from Special Olympics Gibraltar reads:
Following Special Olympics Gibraltar medal winning success in golf at the last World Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2015, two golfers are training hard for the next World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi next month. Julian De Las Heras and Nicholas Payas will be representing the Rock in the golf competition at the prestigious Yas Links Golf Course in Abu Dhabi, ranked as the 44th best course in the World.
They have plenty of experience of playing on a top course though having been practising at the exclusive San Roque Golf Club for several years. The Club has supported Special Olympics Gibraltar golfers from the start with their resident golf pro, Mark Emery, providing weekly lessons at the top facilities which San Roque can provide.
The Club will be going one step further on Saturday 9 th February when they will be staging the “Special Olympics Gibraltar Golf Tournament”, all proceeds from which will be donated to SO Gibraltar to help fund the trip to Abu Dhabi. There will also be a presentation to Julian and Nicholas on the day and an opportunity for members to meet the athletes which they are helping to support.
Nicholas is no stranger to the limelight having brought home a silver medal from the Los Angeles Games in 2015 in what was SO Gibraltar’s first foray into a World Games golf competition. Head Coach for the Abu Dhabi trip Andrew Ramage said “The trip to Abu Dhabi is an exciting opportunity for our athletes to show what they can do on the World stage, against international competition. Golf brings a huge amount of enjoyment and a great sense of achievement to all of our golfers week in week out thanks to the support of Mark and all at the San Roque Club. This will be the trip of a lifetime for them and a great golfing experience”. The World Summer Games take place from March 14 th to the 21 st with 7,500
athletes from over 170 countries competing.
